Smartphone Literacy-2-What is OS?

In Smartphone Literacy, today we are going learn about Platform.

When i asked my friend do you know platform?  he replied with a weird answer, yes i know - it's railway station platform. I know it's PJ (poor joke). 

What i think about Platform is software that allows applications, hardware and other features to talk with each other, perform user defined task and gives the output. 

A mobile platform is also described as an OS... Now you got it yes, Operating System.
 

A mobile operating system starts up when a mobile turns on. It shows a screen with icons ir titles that present information and provide access. 

Several Mobile OS are available in market and every one has it's own features which fulfil the requirements of end user. Lets see which are those OS

Windows Mobile - 

Invented by Microsoft, offers best compatibility with Microsoft applications like MS Office, MS exchange. Microsoft offers more than 550 applications on the Microsoft Market Place for mobile. 

iOS -

Originally iphone OS, invented and developed by Apple exclusively for Apple Hardware. Apple's App Store Provides more than 100,000 applications for purchase and download. 

In Oct 2011 apple released iOS 5, which expanded the applications to over 500,000

Plam -

Also known as Garnet OS. Developed by Palm Inc, in 1996. Palm OS is written in C++ and now being replaced by WebOS. This OSworks well for contact handling, email, web surfing, calendaring and offers mire than 200 applications. 

Symbian -

Symbian OS was developed by accenture on behalf of Nokia (Symbian Ltd.) It works well with touchscreen. Offers 5,500 contents ranging from applications to videos and ringtones.

Blackberry -

This one is proprietary Operating system developed by blackberry ltd for BlackBerry smartphones. This OS is known for its easy to use messaging and management functions. It offers mire than 3000 applications available at blackberry App world.

After reading all these information my friend asked me in low voice  "which one is better OS?, i thought that there are only smartphones and that too Android Smartphones"

Ooooops i forgot Android OS... Just joking.  lets see how is android OS.

Android -

Android mobile operating system is developed by Google. This OS is designed for touchscreen mobile devices such as smartphones and tables. Direct manipulation user interface and virtual keyboard to text input made this OS popular one.
Most importantly it integrats with google services and is open source.
It offers more than 10,000 applications available at Android Market. Anyone can build their own applications and can offer in Android Market.

So from this information now it's your time to think for what purpose you are going to use your mobile and select accordingly the Operating System.
